Wildlife & Natural Attractions

Despite its size, eSwatini offers accessible and intimate wildlife experiences. The country boasts several excellent game reserves where visitors can see a wide range of African wildlife, including the Big Five. The smaller size of the parks often translates to more personal and less crowded safari experiences compared to larger, more famous parks in other countries. Additionally, wildlife activities such as rhino tracking on foot in Hlane and Mkhaya offer an unparalleled connection with these magnificent animals. At Mlilwane, self-guided exploration on foot, by bike, or on horseback allows incredibly close encounters with non-dangerous game.

Hlane Royal National Park
This is eSwatini’s largest protected area, featuring vast lowveld bushveld. It is one of the few places in the country where visitors can see the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo—with strong populations of rhinos, both black and white, and elephants. Hlane offers traditional game drives, as well as unique walking safaris, including guided rhino tracking on foot. Mountain biking safaris are also available in certain areas.

Mkhaya Game Reserve
Mkhaya is a private, exclusive reserve dedicated to protecting endangered species, most notably black and white rhinos. It offers some of the most intimate and thrilling rhino encounters in Africa. Visitors often stay in open-air stone and thatch chalets, fully immersing themselves in the bush. The reserve is an exceptional conservation success story.

Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary
Set in the picturesque Ezulwini Valley, Mlilwane is eSwatini’s pioneer conservation area. Known for its relaxed atmosphere and the absence of dangerous predators, it allows visitors to walk, cycle, or ride horseback among zebras, wildebeest, impala, and other non-predatory game. This makes it ideal for a gentle introduction to safari experiences while enjoying stunning scenery.

Malolotja Nature Reserve
This vast, mountainous highveld wilderness in the northwest is ideal for serious hikers and nature lovers. It features dramatic landscapes, deep gorges, waterfalls including the impressive Malolotja Falls, and incredible diversity of flora and birdlife. The reserve is also home to the thrilling Malolotja Canopy Tour, a series of zip-lines through a forest gorge. Nearby, Shewula Nature Reserve, a community-run reserve in the Lubombo Mountains, offers an authentic cultural and nature experience, promoting responsible tourism while allowing visitors to engage with the local community.

Phophonyane Falls Nature Reserve
A tranquil and scenic reserve known for its beautiful waterfall and ancient rock formations. It is perfect for a peaceful escape, with scenic walking trails, excellent bird watching, and a charming eco-lodge, offering a serene retreat in nature.
